[Philmont] The old fashioned lawn chair

Ah, the webbed lawn chair...

True story to follow:

Back in the day when it was easy to get into Philmont and you could pretty much do what you wanted once there (1981), my dad joined us as an advisor for my first Philmont experience (his first backpacking experience).

He did really well, but HATED sitting on the ground, and complained that the round logs were giving him the piles (I didn't know what that meant at the time). Anyway, we were on (very old) itinerary 9 and had just walked into Miners Park. Our Scoutmaster, Alvin Williams (some of you old timers - no offense - may recognze his name) and another adult decided to hike back into base camp to take a bunch of gear we were carrying that we didn't need any longer (they probably wanted ice cream). When they returned (via a staffer's ride) they had with them a shiny new tube/webbing lawn chair for dad.

Alvin carried the chair the rest of the trip, and no one but dad was allowed to sit in it. I still laugh to this day thinking about the look on dad's face when Alvin pulled that chair out.

Dad went back to Philmont as an advisor again in 1984 with my little brother, but I don't remember if the lawn chair made it on that trip. I was off on (very old) trek 24, and had miles to worry about...

I still remember a guy hiking by us on our 2002 trek with quite the
contraption on his backpack. As he got closer, we saw that it was a full
size, old-style, aluminum lawn chair with webbing. He said it didn't
really weigh much, but was the first thing he put in when he packs for any
backpack.
