I think the staff member you speak of at Rich Cabins is Joe. He told us he
was a music professor at a community college back home the remainder of the
year.
I think we had 7 or 8 crews at Rich Cabins and went inside for the program
and it was packed. It was one of the better programs.
We got our fuel bottles refilled at Rich Cabins and somehow ended up with
kerosene instead of white gas, which left a little sour taste. Don't know if
the staff made a mistake or the Scouts we sent to get the bottles refilled
screwed up somehow.
We overcame the problem easily enough though and still remember the
outstanding program there. We even saw their resident bear roaming about at
lunch time just after we arrived and were setting up camp.

Just a bit of information on the property where Rich Cabins is located.
The staff at Rich Cabins told us that an oil company owned that property
for years and used it for a corporate retreat. Then they decided to let
the Boy Scouts use it for free as an interpretive program. The property
was sold to Ted Turner a few years back, who kept that agreement in place.
Rich Cabins is a hidden gem. The LNT camping was good preparatory for
camping in the Valle and the campfire was outstanding. Since that camp is
lightly used (2-4 crews each night), everyone could crowd on the
screened-in porch for campfire (so no bugs) and they have 3 porch swings.
There is one staff member at Rich Cabins this year who plays at least four
instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin and flute). Talk about musical
talent.... YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 and '07).
