I just got back from trek 32 (703-O). The night of July 12 we were
sleeping at Harlan, and it was raining hard most of the night. I was
toasty dry in my Eureka Rainier... but my co-advisor was getting dripped
on in his ultra light tent (I don't know the make).
Around 2 AM I heard him outside his tent. I suggested he join me for the
night, but he was stubborn and bound and determined to fix the leak. He
told me (the next morning) that he was out in his underwear and
raincoat, moving the groundcloth from the bottom to the top of his tent,
tying it in place with dental floss. Each time he squatted down to tie a
corner he couldn't help but fart, and he was constantly worried about
being eaten by a bear.
We had seen a bear the day before on the trail from Santa Claus down to
Turkey Creek Turnaround. The kids had stopped on the trail, and my heart
raced as I caught up to see the bear not more than 20-30 yards off the
trail in some bushes. It could easily have been on the trail in two
leaps. Luckily it looked lazily over towards us, and then resumed
whatever it was doing in the bushes. We took a picture and moved on. I
looked behind me several times as we went on down the trail, just in case.
