Chas,
Well said. I would add one more step to your list, however.
Lead by example and train harder than anyone else on your crew. Your crew will appreciate your efforts and you'll have a more enjoyable trek because you're in shape.

Scott, here's the basic story.....
Step one - find a group of well motivated kids
Step two - sign up for a council contigent, otherwise you have to hope for a crew slot.
Step three - Ask Cooper for a copy of his Phil guide, and follow it. CoopWright@aol.com
Step four - give the kids the tools they need, and help them prepare for backpacking trips.
Step five - get out of their way, and have fun watching them learn.
Step six - go to Philmont and have fun
Step seven - After the trek, get the crew to start helping others enjoy Philmont.

Can you good folks tell a new scoutmaster how to begin the process of getting his troop out to Philmont?
Thanks in advance,
