Another way to manage pack weight is to eat the heavier food first. I think
everyone here on the list practices meal shifting when we have dry camps.
our crews found that some meals weighed quite a bit more than the meals on
the other days - specifically lunches. Our crews would eat the canned ham
and chicken meals before the squeezable lunches... etc

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned: If weight is an issue for the
smaller crew members, eat the food in their packs first. What I mean is as
food is consumed, adjust the 'sharing' so that the smaller guys get the
benefit of the reductions first. It might be a capacity issue too. Smaller
crew members probably have smaller packs - at least if they are going to fit
reasonably well.
