[Philmont] Keeping warm and dry

I agree with Dan. I only carry a fleece, rain jacket, and rain pants
for layers. No long underwear or other long sleeve shirts. Also no
stocking cap or gloves. I actually have put the rain pants on only once
in 3 treks and did not really need them then, but I still think it is
good to carry them just in case.

I agree that rainpants should be in your pack. We were in a
thunderstorm on Hart Peak last year and had to wait-out the lightning
for 45 minutes. It was a cold rain and the one Scout in our group who
decided not to bring his rainpants was shivering with cold by the time
we began hiking again. Everyone else was fine.

I don't see the need for a thermal shirt or long underwear. If it is
cold, a T-shirt, fleece and rainjacket will keep you warm, probably too
warm if you are hiking. Likewise, a pair of zip-offs and rainpants
will keep you plenty warm for a summer trip at Philmont.
