A Philmont Widow’s Musings:
How subtly it began... the picture of his 14 year old self at Philmont,
the wearing of his Philmont belt and buckle, the Philmont t-shirt under
his regulation shirt. I should have known at that moment, but who could
have known two weeks with Polar Pure and dehydrated food would take my
husband of 27 years?
I remember the day so vividly - the day of the call.
“We have a spot for your son…and you.”
How we all celebrated!!!
Had I only known…now though, I have lost not only him, the garage, the
living room, the desk, and our life savings, but OUR EMAIL account!
Alas, I leave messages on his cell phone just hoping one day he will
return. Every night he is up late mixing spices, trying on new socks,
modeling new fleece, and repacking backpacks.
(I am wondering now, with the kind of packages appearing on our doorstep,
if he replaced our daughter’s wedding registry from Macy’s to REI??)
Actually, I am so happy for him (I forget his name) because with
shakedowns, Saturday treks, compass training, and endurance workouts he is
one happy guy!
I wish him well and am thankful he has all of you. I just want to make
sure that as he drives off for the mountains of New Mexico that he has not
only his equipment packed away in the car…but also our son.
Happy Trails to all!
