Hi Tony,

Did you run into any guys from Wisconsin? The Bay-Lakes Council had three crews arriving the same day you did. Crews 708-I-1, 708-I-2 and 708-I-3.

I haven't had a chance to catch up with any of them yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting a trip report.

We are just back from Philmont. Crew 708A. We had a great time. It was my third trip, but the first with no fire ban. Firewood was plentiful and burnt with amazing intensity. It rained almost every day in the afternoon. Just enough to cool it off and hold the dust down. There was a great thunderstorm on our last night in base camp, and we smirked how that must be scaring the kids who were trailbound. Water was plentiful everywhere. We hiked with our own personal ranger for two days. Will McAdoo, who is from our troop, did not serve as our ranger but hiked with us on his days off. Now that's amazing. To see a boy you took on his first trek, next do Rayado, and then become a ranger. He is having the time of his life. It rained so much we could not do the trail work for conservation, so we shoveled p*** in the burro pens. A real life lesson for our city scouts. We ordered pizza on the trail. I know that is a no-no-, but it was the crew leader's call
and a memorable experience. We saw our first bear at Tooth of Time camp. He was circling the camp and checking out each sump. While in base camp I saw a bad injury, a gashed leg, on a boy who had been horsing around on the Tooth in the dark. We heard of a scout who got lost after someone (an adult?) pulled a knife on him on the trail. Our favorite camp was Deer Lake. The least favorite was Upper Clark's Fork. The pilot to bombardier was smashed and the area was covered with inadequate cat holes.

Question. Do you think Philmont would stop using the American flag as the crew leader's gift? Our leader was careful, but there are simply too many opportunities and occasions when the flag is mistreated. A Philmont flag would work better, and it would have more meaning in 20 years when he or she shows it to the kids.
