This subject has been running a while, but since Doug gave some
official-ness to it, I'll add this. The plan of having the lead advisor
give the US flag to the Crew Leader at closing campfire is a fairly recent
event. In 1991 and through most of the 90s, it was reversed - the Crew
Leader presented it to the lead advisor. Then one year (maybe 2000), the
campfire MC had the Crew Leader give it to the lead advisor, then asked the
advisor to formally present it back to the Crew Leader. I always gave our
flag back to the Crew Leader anyway, and I specifically remember in 1996
that I presented it back to the Crew Leader at a troop Court of Honor in
September.
I'm glad Philmont has now settled on having the flag presented to the Crew
Leader in the first place. That's the way it should be, I think. I have my
personal US flag, slightly smaller, that I have carried on 10 Phil Treks. I
often rotate it around so that everyone in the crew, usually the "point" for
that day, gets to carry it one day. That's my special flag, that everyone
has carried, and the Crew Leader has his special flag, the official one
given by Philmont.

Subject: [Philmont] Crew Leader's Gift
At the Opening Campfire, the crew leaders receive an American flag as a
reminder of their responsibility to provide leadership on the trail.
Traditionally, it has been tied onto the crew leader's backpack.
