To me, the flag tied to a pack is not a decoration, but I can see how others would see it differently. One thing that I forgot to say in my earlier post is that I can certainly understand why veterans and those who are perhaps a bit older than me and lived through all of the deliberate flag desecration, etc. during the Vietnam era might have a different reaction when it comes to the display of the flag.
I don't think this list is typically monitored by the Philmont administration (honestly, they don't have the time!), so those that feel strongly about things like this might want to write to Philmont or say something about it on the eval forms you get when you come off the trail.

Customs change and I think its time maybe for some other kind of crew leader flag besides the American flag - I think the US flag is overdone as decoration and leads to a loss of respect. Before some of you get your zip-offs all twisted let me say; I am a veteran (US Army -1970-72), Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recip., past DE and very happy with Philmont memories (64, 82, 05-the first with US flag). When the new uniform was introduced in 1980 it didn't have a flag - that came sometime later, prior to that you had to go on Intern. trip like a World Jambo. Unless the custom changed there is only one flag on a military post. I think using US flags as art for picnic napkins, mugs, car stickers, and lapel pins for everyone violates the flag code that says the flag shouldn't be used for decoration. Show respect for the flag, flown at every staffed camp, and don't use it as a decoration on packs.
