I had heard from a summer staff member that a Railroad themed camp located
in the North Ponil Canyon was being considered. Since this is the route of
the Cimarron & Northwestern Railroad it is certainly an appropriate venue.
Perhaps the program at the Continental Tie and Lumber Camps (Crater Lake and
especially Pueblano) will begin to focus on cutting railroad ties to
supplement the program. Historically the railroad was built to haul timber
out of the Ponil area, a spur went up to the Pueblano Ruins area. In fact,
part of the trail over Wilson Mesa follows an old logging road used in the
operation. Once the timber was harvested (around the early '30's), the
railroad was abandoned.
On a similar note, I have also heard that Philmont is considering opening a
staffed camp somewhere in the 'no staff zone' on either side of highway 64.
Perhaps Santa Claus or Visto Grande. I know water could be a problem, and I
think that is why the staff camps at those two locations were discontinued.
But I also believe that Philmont wants to be able to get to crews faster and
have an evacuation point/staging area in the event of a fire like the Ponil
Complex fire in 2002 or Rivera Mesa fire in 2006 occurred in that region.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
