Chas. Clifton writes: "As for the Nalgene/Bladder discussion, BOTH are way better than the US Army surplus aluminum canteens we used when I was a Scout."
In 1970, I headed off to the Ranch as a crew member in 816-B-4, with my two Army surplus canteens, each with canteen cup, cover, and both attached to an Army surplus web belt. I had a borrowed BSA Camper pack on a cruiser pack frame, also with a web hip strap.
After a few days on the trail, I belatedly realized that the hip strap on top of the canteen belt on top of the newly purchased Philmont belt that was holding up my blue jeans was cutting into the skin atop my hip bones. At that age, when attempting something you know is going to be a strain, sometimes you don't realize right away that it's not "supposed to" hurt.
Well, the canteen belt wound up stowed in the pack (or maybe sent down to base with my friend Tony, who had developed a monster of a blister-the next year, a monsoon would chase him out of the 1971 Jamboree in Japan-what luck) and one of the canteens found a home in a side pocket. I carried the small scars on my hip bones well into adulthood, as a reminder of my first Philmont trek.
All for now.
