We're heading out shortly with 3 troop 151 crews for 802 treks (15, 18
and 31). If any list members will be out there, I'd love to have the
chance to visit! Meanwhile, I thought for your amusement I'd pass
along this email which I got today from one of my JASMs who is crew
leader for the guys going in itinerary 31:
"Mr. Cook,
It has become a bit of a tradition for 151 crews to dye their hair
blue when they go to Philmont. Some in my crew have said they wanted
to do this, but as I was researching dying options I ran across an odd
problem. One of the methods I found involves using unsweetened Koolaid
to dye the hair. What I am wondering is, would this make my head a
smellable? The main reason I am looking into this option is price,
enough Koolaid for the crew would cost a lot less than hair dye. Here
are two different recipes I found, the second one is much more
feasible because of our time restraints.

I know Philmont is strict with their bear policies, and I am strict
with not losing my head."
Now, he's right, the last 3 151 expeditions (2001, 2003, and 2005)
have all died their hair blue (it's a Georgetown High School thing,
that's the school colors), but it had never occurred to me to wonder
about what dye technology they used. After I stopped laughing, I
thought about it a bit and sent a note back suggesting that using
commercial dye would probably be best for safety reasons. He responded
that he'd bought enough commercial dye for everyone, so if any of you
see blue-haired guys on the trail out there, they're ours. Thankfully,
as far as I know, the other two crews haven't remembered this
tradition and aren't prepared to do the same. We'll see.
