Ummm...
(Bill, don't know if John is pulling your leg or not, but...)
In the rocky mountains of the US, brown bears and black bears are the same
species - just different shades of color on a particular bear. (Further
north, we are more concerned about the human interaction behavioral
differences of another species - the grizzly bear.)
Unpredictable is a fair characterization. Due to the drought and other
factors, we're continuing to see more human-bear interactions along the
front range, rather than less. Following the prevention guidelines of the
land management agencies (like Philmont) is a good way to avoid close, and
potentially unpleasant, encounters...
I feel that the best way to encounter a bear (for both party's benefit) is
with a few hundred yards distance between human and bear.
