Hi Josh. Let me try and answer your questions.
1. What does "repackaging" food consist of? (combining ingredients, opening boxes, etc)
Dr. Bob Klein opens up his meal bags that contain the smaller items and gets rid of the bulk and weight; boxes for spreadables and crackers and any food item the crew know they are not going to eat. I don't because at least in the case of the crackers, th
e box keeps them from becoming crumbs inside of someone's pack. It really is up to you. If you do repackage, make sure you have some duct tape to reseal the bags to keep food items inside dry.
2. Does anyone know about the training the crew leader, scribe, and chaplain's aide are supposed to get on our check-in day?
Your crew leader and chaplain's aide will have training the same time you get your advisor's meeting on the first night at base camp. Just listen for the times when you begin your inprocessing.
3. Where could we pick up white gas outside of Philmont?
You can buy your white gas when you go to Services. So be sure to bring your fuel bottles and stoves along during your inprocessing. Our crew always carries a Coleman fuel filter and we ask Philmont to use it whenever we pick up gas, whether in the backc
ountry or at Base Camp.
4. If the only clothes that are supposed to enter your tent are your sleeping clothes, where do you change from your day's clothes into sleeping clothes since you can't in your tent?
We typically sit on the edge of the tent and change into sleeping clothes. I have also heard of some crews changing under the tarp; youth first, then adults. Just use a little discretion and it will be no big deal. Unless you have dumped the entire pot
of chicken and rice on top of yourself, you are not bringing in very much that smells. However, the sleeping clothes routine might be modified because the the current bear situation, so just listen to your Ranger.
With 18 days left, it is probably too late to get a copy of the Philmont Advisor's Guide. Anyway, hope this helps and have a great trek.
