RE: [Philmont]: Choosing a Trek

I successfully took a boy who could not walk 7 months prior to departure.
He had foot drop from his chemo treatments. The Doc's had removed nearly
90% of his liver. Needless to say, he won the Ponil Camp Fire "Toughest
Man" contest:-)

He worked twice as hard as the rest of the crew. Contrary to most advice,
he was our lead for most of the trek. We were slow, but steady using the
caterpillar often.

Biggest key to success was following Coop's Advisor Guide advice and early
and complete communication with the Philmont medical staff. They had all
they needed to approve his participation, acknowledging that this boy would
have scarred knees from tripping a lot. He sure did, but did it anyway.
Did it every day, carrying all of his and fairs hare of crew gear.

Quite an example for me.

We did Trek 21 including Baldy. Hope it is available again this year:-\

Subject: [Philmont]: Choosing a Trek

We will be going next year and I have a question concerning the different
treks available.
One of our scouts has a heart condition that requires a pacemaker. He tires
easily and has difficultly hiking more than a mile or two without pack. He
is an Eagle scout and really wants to experience Philmont. The other boys
are willing to split up his pack and carry it for him. That leaves the
question of distance we could cover in a 10 day period. I have heard there
is a "wrangler" trek there. Would we be able to take that? Our scouts have
shown an interest in that trek as all of them have their 50 miler from
Northern Tier.
