Black bear is a distinct species. Grizzly, brown and polar bears are, I
think, all the same species, with the variations being more like "races"
than anything else. The variations are more dependent on environment,
especially availablility of food. Kodiak Brown Bears are huge because they
have a lot of food available.
Black bears can have different colors: black, black with white markings,
brown, and cinnamon. Some are black and cinnamon, as was the bear I saw at
Bent Camp in 1996.
I respect and admire the Black Bear from personal experience. Blacks will
diligently look for food, methodically searching everywhere their nose leads
them. The Black Bears in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks have learned
how to defeat bear bag and ropes, including working cooperatively. They
will "fight" for food, as that is what their instincts require. Our job as
visitors to their home is to make sure we camp cleanly and store our
smellables appropriately.
