John makes some good points here.

Although I am not going to the ranch this summer :>( I too have been
passing along the information regarding the drought, bears and fires to
adult contingent leaders and advisors. Whether they pass it along to
their crews I don't know, but I hope so.

IMO it is much easier for crew members and maybe more importantly
parents, to find out things in advance and to be able to ask questions
and get additional information. This way crews can "be prepared" and
know that things will be different than expected. They may also be able
to take steps to mitigate certain conditions, i.e. carry additional
water bottles. And it has got to be better than getting a phone call
from the ranch at check-in telling the folks at home that the trek has
been changed "because of the forest fires". I have a very vivid idea of
how this little tidbit of information would set with most parents and
the numerous questions it would spawn (can you say concerned/irrate
calls to the council service center?).

It's not like the information has been classified or for members of this
list only. To me, this is information that is at least as valuable as
information about the program activities at XXX or ways to lighten your
pack weight.

My $0.02 anyway

Happy Trails
