Dear John,
As has been previously stated, your concerns are no different from
those of some of the subscribers to this list. In fact it is instructional to
see that even "long in the tooth" Scouters, experience the same frustrations
as those for who this is "their first Rodeo."
The greatest lesson is that the program survives despite what we (as
adults) do. This is probably because of the quality of our youth and the
opportunity that we give them through the Scouting bulwarks. Those beads that
you wear around your neck are a key to your understanding level. You teach by
example and by living the ideals of the 12 points of the Law. Remember that
there are many people that will support you in your efforts to deliver a
quality program to the youth. Don't forget the resource of the Ranger during
the first couple of days. Hopefully they will get your crew in a better state
of mind and set the other advisor straight.
Others learning paths sometimes take a longer route. Be supportive,
look for teaching opportunities and enjoy your "walk in the woods" with some
great young people.
Hope to hear about your successes when you get back.
Yours in Philmont Spirit,
John Herrholz
