Just got back from PTC a couple of hours ago. Here's what little I know about
the fires.
The buildings at Ponil were saved and the fire crew trapped there are OK,
everything else is black.
Cabin at Indian Writtings was burned
Philmont got 2/10 to 3/10 of rain Tuesday afternoon, not nearly enough to
make much difference. It also snowed on Baldy Tuesday but it was gone by
Thursday.
Brent Madzen (Madzen Pottery) at Ute Park said the fire had burned up to the
ridge North of Hwy 64 when the rain slowed it down.
Strong south winds Wed. nite and Thursday flared the fire again and Friday
Morning it was reported as a Type 1 fire ?? and no longer controlled.
As of Thursday an estimated 22000 acres of the North Country had been burned,
including Ponil, Dean and Turkey Creek canyons. I don't know how far to the
NW Ponil burned or if the cabin at Bent camp was burned.

All the range land is brown or dust. Long time residents of Cimarron say it
is the worst drought since the '50's and conditions are driest than I have
seen in the 15 years that I have been going to PTC. Analope were feeding on
Hwy 64 between Raton and Cimarron, and I had to stop for one in the middle of
the road. Both analope and mule deer are in extremely poor condition.
