Kudos John! Well Said!
For those of us who have been to Philmont before, we
know the administration IS top notch, and only has our
safety in mind. That said, as has been said, there are
no bad treks! This is an adventure! My crew has called
me asking what is up, am I going to call, what will we
do???

As I have told them, today we are "here", and when we
get "there" we still will only be "here" now. Lets see
what they toss at us. Lets dream of where they may send
us, lets go where our feet lead us.

Where the fire is concerned, lets look for the positives
that will eventually come from it. That area of the
country needs fire for the ecosystem to function
properly. In treks past I have had conversations with
the people at the conservation areas who lamented that
they needed " a good fire" . There was talk off and on
of having "controlled burns" but the prevailing wisdon
was that it was too much of a risk. Were the fire to get
out of control (remember Bandolier and Los Alamos in
'00), the Boy Scouts could not afford the tab for the
fire fighters.

If we have to have a fire this is the best way. There
are over 917 person's fighting this fire. New Mexico's
Senator and other elected representatives have gotten
federal aid from FEMA to help cover the cost of the fire
fighting effort.

All we can do is keep the phone lines open, be patient,
be flexible, be a Scout. For those of you who have not
been to Philmont before, don't worry, they will take
care of you, be prepared to change, and pay attention in
logistics. Have fellowship with the people sharing your
campsite that in "normal" years you would never even
know were at the ranch. Thank the Almighty when you have
to hike in the rain.
