Karl,
The Polaris-style is my recommendation. I've bought/carried plain and fancy and my
long-term observation is that the Scouts do far, far better with a flat compass with
a plastic rectangular base. Liquid-filled steadies the needle faster for them, too.
Bright, easy-to-read numbers on an easily turned (but not too loose) bezel ring also
aide their getting over frustration with a new skill.
The main reason I like the rectangular-based kind over the mirror or military type is
the Circle of Life. That's what we were taught the circle is called the Scouts will
be taught to get in when the crew is discussing or making a decision. It involves
each Scout; no one has a bad view; and everyone can participate who wants to. This
little circle usually revolves around a map held out among them. Those with
flat-based compasses can more easily lay it down on the map, stay in the Circle, and
learn about orientation as well as actually reading a bearing.
Finally, whatever brand you recommend for your Scouts, strongly suggest it have added
to it a string that will allow the Scout to pull it in front of his/eyes at a
moment's notice. Anything--anything--that makes it even the slightest difficult to
pull out that compass will doom it not to be used. That Scout will not only be left
out of valuable decision-making discussions, he will also begin not to care and just
let someone else lead him like a sheep.

Does anyone have a suggestion of compass model? We will be working with the boys
shortly and would like to recommend a good model.
Thanks,
Karl
