[Philmont]: Lack of Information

From: Dr. Bob Klein (drbob@troop111.org)

Couple of points. First, although the lack of information is
frustrating, keep in mind that the current situation on the Ranch is
hardly in stasis; in fact, it is highly dynamic and changing literally
every day. What good is advice given today to a Crew arriving next
week, when next week's situation may be completely different? - for
example (perish the thought!) a fire starts in the heart of the south
country this Wednesday?

Second, although it may not seem so when you're there, the number of
professional staff at Basecamp is actually rather small. Yes, they're
highly efficient, but consider the enormity of the current situation:
trying to coordinate with the fire management teams, rearrange one to
two dozen treks a day, reallocate displaced seasonal staff, open little
used or old camps, come up with replacement and scratch programs on the
fly, monitor rarely utilized water sources, and (of course) deal with
God only knows how many hundreds of phone calls a day. Lot of
alligators in that swamp! In an ideal world, BSA National would have a
hundred extra staffers at the Ranch right now to help deal with all
these issues. Anyone care to bet whether they sent a hundred? How
about fifty? How about ten? Anyone who's been around the BSA for more
than 10 years already knows the answer to that one....

An informational website would be an excellent addition to the Ranch,
and that has been previously suggested here, and also on dynapolis.com,
and elsewhere. However, it's another tasking on an already overtasked
staff - and right now, I would suspect that keeping such a site updated
would be just about low man on the priority totem pole. [And as a
rather ascerbic editorial aside, I will also add that the Ranch may have
been put off by the ridiculous BSA by-laws governing official Scout
websites (read them sometime for a good laugh).]

Anyway, my *speculation* is when our first arriving Crews report back to
the list, you will hear one of three things: (A) For treks that are all
below Rt 64, no changes, have a great trek. (B) For treks that spend
some time above Rt 64, those sections above Rt 64 will be re-routed - so
you'll have part of your original trek, and part something new; have a
great trek. (C) For treks that are all or mostly all above Rt 64,
you'll either get an existing all south of Rt 64 trek, or you'll get a
newly created all south of Rt 64 trek that we just came up with this
past week; have a great trek. I also wouldn't be surprised to hear that
most treks had more than two Crews on them - for those where the camps
can handle them, maybe as many as four Crews.

Bottom lines are: 1) They really can't tell you anything specific
before you get there; 2) They WILL take care of you WHEN you get there;
and 3) You WILL have a great trek regardless, AFTER you get there.

- Dr. Bob, keeping those prayer wheels spinning....
