Ah yes. The Webelos Overnighter. Truly one of the
highlights of a wonderful week my older son and I spent
at PTC last year. I really looked forward to it after
one of the list regulars (I think it might have been
you, Kevin) described the experience. I'm going to add
my two cents here since things were a bit different
when we did it.

Our overnighter was at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, which
is near the Stockade (at the foot of the Tooth of Time).
This is where they hold NJLIC (National Junior Leader
Instructor Camp) which is a class for Boy Scouts who
will be teaching at their council JLTC (Junior Leader
Training Conference). We went to PTC in late July
after NJLIC was done so RMSC was an option.
RMSC has the typical "scout camp" wall tents on wooden
platforms. These are a smaller version of the tents
you'll stay in at PTC. Cots and mattresses are
provided.
As Kevin said, you eat dinner at PTC and then board
a bus that takes you to your campsite.

Actually we had a campfire, which was pretty awesome.
The various dens did skits and songs and we had some
stories (etc) from the staff. The most memorable
part was how DARK it was! I was sitting at the back
of the campfire ring and looked out into the woods
and could see absolutely nothing. (It was a new
moon.) Sadly with the current fire danger situation
I can't see campfires being a part of it this year.
:(

Yes, we had a little 'cracker barrel' and then off
to bed.
Now for the other very memorable part of the experience.
Last year at least, RMSC was (according to the staff)
the second 'hottest' bear area at Philmont, so we had
to observe bear protocols -- no smellables after 2pm,
change into 'sleep' clothes (that were clean and hadn't
been eaten in), etc. Our daytime clothes were kept
up in a building so all we had in our tents were our
sleeping bags and flashlights. And man was it dark!
Some of the other dads claimed they heard a bear in
camp that night (turning over rocks looking for bugs
to eat) but I slept like a log!
We had a great time, and my son and I will always have
the memories of that special night together (and indeed
our week at PTC).

I guess this is a YMMV thing -- we had one lady last
year that had a Webelos-age son and a younger brother,
and he was allowed to just come along with us (the
three of them shared one tent).
YiS,
Stu
PS OK my plea once again -- if anyone gets ahold of
a copy of the 2003 PTC schedule PLEASE post it to the
list! I want to go back ....
