I took my Palm Pilot. Loaded with several e-books, as well as a program
which calculates sunrise/sunset (very useful for figuring out when you
can 'legally' start walking in the AM, it kept me entertained for the
whole trek. I have a Palm V with 8 MB of RAM, so it held a lot of
material, and the batteries lasted the whole trip.

Subject: [Philmont]: Philmont Decadence
Ok Folks, Lets have some fun. Camp has started, crews
are in the back country, we have discussed every aspect
of the Philmont experience that can be imagined, Coop
has made a mint on the Advisors Guide -;)). We talked of
Bears, and Bugs, and Bags, Fire, Ice, Sticks, Stones,
Child protection, tents, compasses, turkey bags, and
lord knows what else.
I personally have pulled all my stuff out. Weighed every
last item, and then weighed it again ( as if it might
lose some weight in between -;)) I've cut the tags out
of my underwear and the handle off my toothbrush. I have
new water bottles, fancy hiking sticks, and 5 ounce
running shoes, all courtesy of this list.
So what I want to know now is what one thing are you
"secretly" going to take to Philmont? You know, the one
thing that is not on any official equipment list?
Personally I stock up on food. I dehydrate cole slaw,
carrots, broccoli slaw and apples. I make a little jerky
and add some dehydrated milk and pack lots of coffee
bags. No way am I going to starve or get scurvy! So
fess up! What is your decadent item??
