I just received a call from my oldest son who is a ranger at Philmont. He
has taken two crews out so far. The last update he had was that the fires
in the north country are 55% contained (if the wind doesn't shift). He has
been talking to a few firefighters (he is also a firefighter but not at
Philmont) and they are optimistic about having the fires out soon. There
were over 1000 firefighters working on the fires in that area but most of
them were called to Denver since that is a more populated area.
Rumor is that the north country could be open by mid July but my son is not
that optimistic. He said nothing more about staff areas being lost to
fire. Only Santa Claus which was burned a while ago.
He said it showered yesterday but not enough to make a difference. Rainfall
is 0.09" so far this year. I received more than an inch this weekend
(Fairport, New York).
Logistics is taking allot of grief from some advisors. He felt more grief
than was necessary. I recall from several years ago we could song and dance
a bit to get little changes to the itinerary but he said no changes would
be considered period. You get what you get.
His bottom line is that he is happy Philmont is open this year. There was
very serious consideration to shutting down completely. Image how unhappy
those disgruntled advisors would be if that happened. He would have been
out of a job stranded in NM. Maybe not such a bad thing. :-)
I probably will not be back to Philmont for another few years but I am
praying for rain for those you going this year.
Good luck and have a good Trek.
