The Philmont issued rope, in the past, has been the bear bag rope. No
substitution is necessary. It is perfect for the job. (Unless it is ornery
enough to wrap itself around a bear cable and refuse to unwrap!!) Smaller
ropes listed in the guidebook are for tie downs, clotheslines, etc. It is
also essential although I am not sure all have to carry. I always have, and
have always used.
