What my Crew took in 2000 was 2 - 1/4" woven nylon ropes 150' long, which we
practiced with on some of our hikes and the ranger seemed to like them to.
We were trying really hard not to have to check anything out. It's really
important to get the woven rope as it's extremely durable, which it has to
be after pulling it over those stainless steel aircraft cables for 10 nights
and when you get a 4 day supply of food and the boys decide they have to
make smellables out of every container (won't happen this time) the ropes
had better be strong. You fold the 150' in half, loop it around the tops of
the bear bags and pull the remaining 75 to tie offs as far away as you can
get them. Evidently in years past Bears have learned that when the hit the
ropes with their claws, food falls from heaven, with 2 ropes holding the
bags tied as high up as possible there is less chance of that.
For the oops bag a 100' of 1/8 rope is what we are going to take this
time, it's worth it rather then bringing down all the bags a second time
later at night. The only other rope you will need 1/8" rope for is tying up
your dinning fly, the ranger had the Crew run a rope under the whole fly to
support it so the grommets wouldn't rip out during high winds and heavy
rains & hail, which we really had in spades.

Subject: [Philmont]: Gear question
I see in the list of Philmont-issued crew gear, that they show 150' x 1/4"
rope. I've seen mentioned that smaller rope can be substituted with a
substantial weight savings. I'd like to do that for our crew but I'm not
clear what the rope is used for. Is it just for the bear bags?
