Richard makes a good point about the value of a
speciality rope. If you do decide to get a rope, make
sure it is a static line. Climbing ropes are either
"static" or "dynamic" Dynamic ropes are used for
belaying etc. and are dynamic because they will stretch,
acting as a shock absorber or giant rubber band in a
climbing fall. They are not any good for a bear rope
because they will stretch way too much when lifting the
heavy bear bags.
Static ropes are commonly used for rapelling and have
very little stretch associated with them. Any rope used
for a bear bag at Philmont would be unsafe for any other
use that involved humans hanging from it or depending on
it.
While it is nice to stive to minimize weight, remember
you have 10 0r 11 other people to help share theload,
the equipment is proven at Philmont under their
rigourous conditions and it is alot lighter than the old
cast iron dutch ovens that the crews used to have to
cook in over wood fires!
