[Philmont]: Trekking pole adjustments

I just got a pair of Komperdell #99645 trekking poles from Sierra Tra=
ding Post. I didn't get any instructions with the poles, I guess tha=
t's the price I pay for getting such a deep discount. I figured out =
most of the features myself, but I have a couple of questions for you=
trekking pole experts. =0D=0A=0D=0AThe poles are in three sections,=
and there's an upper and lower adjustment for height. One of the we=
bsites I visited recommended setting the lower adjustment at its maxi=
mum height, then setting the upper adjustment 2-3 inches below the ar=
mpit. That seems a little high to me. Is it? Also, is there an adv=
antage in setting the lower section at its maximum height? My inclin=
ation would be to "balance" the settings for the adjustable sections.=
=0D=0A=0D=0AI was also wondering whether the baskets are necessary =
for Philmont hiking. They appear to be useful only for marshy or sof=
t muddy ground and I can't imagine their usefulness for Philmont. =
