Dayna,
 
I used my poles for the first time 2 weeks ago and
have to say they were worth every penny I spent on
them. I did use them on practice hikes 3-4 times a
week for a couple months. No blisters and they worked
right into my stride!
 
You may want to checkout a sporting goods store for
the gloves you mentioned. I have a pair that are mesh
on the back for ventilation, leather palms for comfort
and protection, and half fingers for control. I think
they are for weightlifting.
