As others have noted, duffel bags and plastic bags will work just fine.
 
One approach that looks clever is to use "industrial strength" plastic
wrap, like pallets of boxes are sometimes wrapped in. I saw a group
leaving Philmont use this a couple years ago... Cheap and fast.
