Josh Kirlin asks...

Our council's contingent crews both got trek 2, and looking at the itinerary
guide, it says we get two days of western lore. What is different between
those two activities?

Answer...

Pulled out Treks 2002 and looked. While many treks go to or through two of
the three camps with Western lore program (Beaubien, Clark's Fork, and
Ponil), it is usually only listed a program opportunity once - where you can
schedule horse rides. The program at the three camps is identical: morning
or afternoon horse ride (scheduled your day of arrival in Logistics),
branding, roping, horseshoes, and chuckwagon dinner. One difference is that
Ponil also has a chuckwagon breakfast, as well as the Cantina.

For Trek 2, the second listing on Day 10 does not mention either horse rides
or the chuckwagon dinner, so you would be limited a second chance at
branding, roping, and horseshoes, plus of course the evening campfire. Day
10 also lists a "side hike" of Hidden Valley, but there is no way you would
do that as a side hike from Webster Park - you definitely would take your
packs (the mileage/elevation chart is also a little suspect - I think it
shows Day 10 as the straight shot down from Webster Park to Clarks Fork, but
not then up to Upper Clarks Fork. In any event, it does not include Hidden
Valley.)

Anyway, if it was me, I'd do Environmental Awareness at Cito on Day 9 and
sign up for Rock Climbing the morning of Day 10 at 8 a.m. Leave your packs
in a pack line at the cabin while you do the program, then return for them
and head to Hidden Valley. Lunch at Window Rock, then down to Hunting Lodge
for the program there (cabin tour). You'd get to Upper Clarks Fork mid /
late afternoon, have dinner, and head down to Clark's Fork for the campfire
(and Advisor's coffee).
