The only early start I'd consider is one that will have me on the trail
when I can see clearly without the aid of night vision, or flashlights,
and off the trail before the day gets "too hot" (being in central texas,
and having it be 102F today, "too hot" is very relative)
Hiking in the dark is a fools errand. Do it only when health and safty
require.
I'll admit, I've done night hikes before. With scouts. Would I do it
again? not anymore. Was it worth it? Worth what? it didn't get us
anything.
Would I do a night hike without scouts? On terrain I've very familiar with?
Under a bright moon? yes. But don't do it at Philmont.
