We have used platys with no problem as long as you have a large-mouth bottle such as a Nalgene to pour water into the platy since there is usually little depth to the streams to really fill the platy all the way just by putting it into the water to fill.

Several smaller platys 1-2 liter are IMO much better than a couple of large ones. The smaller units allow extra water to be divided among crew members and not just a couple carrying a much heavier load. I recommend the ability of each crew member to carry 3 EXTRA liters. Platy's take next to zero space and weight when not in use, and have done fine for us. Depending on the water situation (which you won't really know until you are out there for your trek) you may have longer hauls of water even when not heading to a dry camp, and if you go prepared for everyone to pitch in with water needs, you'll be ready for whatever you find.

What has been the best collapsible containers for use in collecting the large quantity of water for treatment at camp? I have found some Nalgene cantenes but the largest is 96 ozs. Platypus has some water tanks that go up to 210 ozs that have handles and roll up when not in use. Same empty weight of 3 ozs. Any experience with either?
