Our troop has used the Reliant water bladders in the past, with mixed
success. We found that they very easily sprung pin-hole leaks, the bladders
would roll over on the spout, filling it up with dirt and finally there were
a few occasions where we would have the 1.5 gallon ones in our packs and the
valve would open up when loads shifted. For those less experienced hikers
who didn't bag their gear & clothes ( or the bladder) it had potential for a
disaster...
On our 2002 trek to Philmont, we carried six 96oz tropicana orange juice
jugs and a couple of 1 gallon spring water containers (the clear ones with
the screw cap). These held up to all the abuse of 10 days on the trail.
Prior to using the OJ containers they were throughly washed and aired out,
but we also treated the OJ containers as smellables. The capacity was just
the right size to distribute the weight within the crew.

What has been the best collapsible containers for use in collecting the
large quantity of water for treatment at camp? I have found some Nalgene
cantens but the largest is 96 ozs. Platypus has some water tanks that go
up to 210 ozs that have handles and roll up when not in use. Same empty
weight of 3 ozs. Any experience with either?
Comment....
Each crew member carried one 3 quart Nalgene for crew water on our first
trek in 1999. Those were apparently an early version, and we had some
trouble with the handles tearing. We sent them back to Nalgene, who
replaced them (no questions asked) with a version with a reinforced
handle. We'ved used those since with no problems.
Much easier to carry (full) than the 2-1/2 gallon containers in the crew
gear equipment list in the Guidebook to Adventure. Highly recommend them.
