In 2000 and 2002 we carried the collapsible nalgeen canteens with the screw
on tops. We had two 96 oz and four 48 oz. Two of the 48 oz bottles had the
word "juice" engraved on the top, and were only used for morning juice and
lunch/supper Gatorade. The collapsible bottles didn't take up too much room
in the bear bags.
We also carried a platypus with a pour spout for collecting and distributing
water.
The other advantages we found with the nalgeen bottles were 1) one bottle
could be treated with one bottle of polar pure and 2) we could divide up the
water bags (i.e. weight) when hiking to dry camps. We hiked to two dry
camps in 2002, and it was easy to pass out the water - one bag to a scout.
In 2000, we saw a crew carrying the 2-1/2 gallon container full of water, up
Shafer's pass, and the container was slowing them down.
