All to previous comments concerning the ultra-lite packs are true. I
started using the Go-Lite Speed Adventure Racing Pack last fall. You
have to re-think your methods along with your equipment if you're going
to go ultra-light. The material is thinner, but it's still pretty
durable. You have to take better care of the equipment than your
average Philmont Scout.
Most of the ultra-lite gear is directed at solo or small group
backpacking. Stoves are smaller, cookpots are smaller, etc. You might
be hard pressed to fit all the standard group gear and food into a pack
that small.
As one person stated, the shoulder straps are thinner and not very well
padded. This is true, but with a lighter load you don't need the extra
padding.
Having said all this, I spent eight days last Christmas break and
covered almost the entire Appalachian trail in Georgia using my Go-Lite
pack and shelter. I had one re-supply in the middle. I started in
snow, had sunny days in the 40's and ended in freezing rain. My total
pack weight never got over 30 pounds. IT WAS GREAT!!
I've done a number of short trips with the gear and it keeps getting
better. I'm planning a two week trip later this month for the North
Carolina section of the A.T.
I guess to sum it all up: no matter the size of your pack, you'll fill
it up with something.
