Another alternative is to use a baseball cap and attach a bandana to cover
the neck. I haven't went out looking recently but I seem to recall REI and
campmor carry version of this type setup with velcro fastners, etc. I've
seen backpackers with them particularly in the sunny/hot southwest and a
couple at Philmont.
The commercial versions are long enough to deflect rain past the collar on
a jacket.

Excellent point. A lot of great-looking hats have brims that are so wide
and/or so stiff that your backpack tends to push them forward on your head.
I recommend trying on backpacks and hats together to avoid surprises.
