Jason et al,

At age 58, after two skion cancer removals from the tops of my ears and diminished vision due to other causes and a slight cataract in the good eye, yes, a good hat for sun protection is essential.

Sun damage is cumulative. What you delay by covering up today will help you down the road.

I'm a big fan of wide brimmed felt Akubra hats, have been for years...no decades!

They do get in the way while backpacking. For that I use a light weight cap from REI made of a tan or khaki polyester with side "skirts", They are not removable, but fold neatly into the crown when not neaded on the cooler shady trails. It's a top quality product with an all cloth bill and sells for about $15.00. When soaked in water the coolmax sweatband provides some evaporative cooling effect.

Not sure about the cotton vs poly issue, but shade is shade and the more the better.

It's the one I use while sea kayaking also.

<<What about using a polyester material hat instead of
cotton. All these UV protective shirts that I have seen are made of
polyester. So I'm assuming poly protects from UV rays better than cotton. Just throwing it out there.>>
