Jason:

In addition to the reports of cataracts mentioned by the esteemed Mr.
Gray, and the assorted discussions of sunburn on the neck, you need to
understand the probability of developing skin cancer on the top of your
head.

Based on your posts, you're probably young enough that you have a layer
of insulation (what we oldster's used to refer to as 'hair') between the
sun and your skin. Although I'm not bald (yet), I've been thinning for
20+ years, and never wore a hat -- 17 years living in FL, 7 more here in
NC.

3 years ago I had a (luckily small) squamous cell carcinoma removed, and
have been informed by my dermatologist that I'm likely to develop more
as I get older. See:
http://www.cancer.gov/CancerInformation/WhatYouNeedToKnowAboutSkinCancer

As Rob Haig says, buy the Tilley hat. They come in various rim widths
to allow for not hitting your pack. Mine is white (to reflect the heat)
and has a green bottom (to absorb glare). They're guaranteed for life
not to wear out. If you lose in the first 2 years, you can get one for
half price to replace it. Mine is the T3, which now costs $55 -- it's
worth it!

I guess I will need to change my backpacking atire. I was not aware that
hats protected as much as they do. I don't quite understand how it does
it though. Which brings up another question.

What about using a polyester material hat instead of cotton. All these
UV protective shirts that I have seen are made of polyester. So I'm
assuming poly protects from UV rays better than cotton. Just throwing
it out there.

I guess if I was worried enough about UV rays I'd just stay inside,
which is NOT an option.
