as someone who has gone under the knife multiple times (15+) for removal of
suspicious growths, pre-cancerous growths and two occurances of basal cell
carcinoma (http://www.skincancer.org/basal/) I cannot stress the importance
of proper precautions when in the sun. As a kid, I recieved most of the sun
damage and probably increased my odds of skin cancer with 3 years as a life
guard.

When at Philmont last year I brought 2 hats, one had a wide brim and the
other was a hat with flaps - sort of legioneers style hat. With sun screen,
the hats, shirts with collars I reduced my exposure to the sun and didn't
burn as I thought I would. Perhaps trail grim and the lack of showers on
the trail reduced sun exposure as well.

Cover up - the damage that the sun does is cumulative and can surface 15-20
years later

I guess I will need to change my backpacking atire. I was not aware that
hats protected as much as they do. I don't quite understand how it does
it though. Which brings up another question.

What about using a polyester material hat instead of cotton. All these UV
protective shirts that I have seen are made of polyester. So I'm assuming
poly protects from UV rays better than cotton. Just throwing it out
there.

I guess if I was worried enough about UV rays I'd just stay inside, which
is NOT an option.
