I think the best protection the hat provides is keeping your skull from
cooking. Those of us with high foreheads and patchy hair also appreciate
the sub-burn protection they provide.
cotten vs poly... don't think it matters.
look for a brim that's wide and soft, and plenty of ventilation.
The tilley hats I mentioned before list a UPF factor of 50 I think.
They're cotton. I don't know if a poly hat could protect as well and
be lighter.
