The hat that I've been using is the OR Seattle Sombrero, it's made with
gortex, has a suplex liner inside to absorb sweat and help pull it away from
your head. Because it's pretty flexible I can were it with my internal frame
backpack and the back just bends down and not knock it off my head. I got
turned on to it because here in Oregon it does rain and both times I've been
to Philmont, 2000, 704-K2 & 2002, 726-L1 we had the great experience of the
drought breaking and it rained a lot, so the hat did everything we needed. I
had two boys who had the hats in 2000 and I really couldn't see paying
$45.00 for a hat, but after my son talked me into getting him one and having
them stand around and never, ever get wet and stay reasonably cool with the
airspace above their brain, I bought one.
I've been a happy backpacker ever since with the OR hat. You can also find
them on sell occasionally though Campmor.com, Sierratradingpost.com, the REI
web sites are also good place. Make sure you try them on before you buy a
hat as the sizes seem to change.
Also I bought on of the wool felt hats when I was at Philmont when I was
there in 1996 and was told the would hold their shape and keep your head
cool, they didn't do either. I still like it and keep it for Scouting
activities but I have found that you really have to figure out what's for
the PTC participants and what's for the Trekkers. With the idea that most
Trekkers had better have everything when they get there, think of souvenirs,
the Nalgene water bottles are great for that.

Subject: [Philmont]: sombrero hats
Anyone know if Tooth of Time Traders has the wide brim hats. I have the
catalogue and all that is in it are baseball caps. Does anyone have the
email address for them to see if they will be carrying these this summer?
Thanks,
Garry Black
