For those discussing/considering but hesitant about going
commando, you might try using nylon swim trunks with the built in
brief/liner. They're light & quick drying. The only downside
might be that they leave you either bunched or commando when you
switch to long pants. That said, on my own treks, I have only
worn long pants for required activities (i.e. spar poles), and
never taken rain pants. I prefer a long raincoat (mid thigh) and
gaiters. If the hems of my shorts get wet, so be it. The gaiters
go a long way towards keeping my legs warm. And with a hat, a
good jacket/fleece, and movement I have rarely been cold
regardless of the season. YMMV.
