Well I wish I could be more positive, but painting an unrealistic view
of your chances wouldn't be very helpful - or Scoutlike. In truth, you
have probably THE most difficult scenario - not hopeless, but not likely
either. No-one enjoys twisting slowly, slowly in the wind. But as I
said, things can change. FWIW, if I were you, if you don't want to try
and co-arrange an alternate trek in Colorado or New Mexico, I would set
a mental cutoff in early 2004, something like "if the waiting list
hasn't passed #120 by January 15th, then we are cancelling". That way,
you still have 6 months to plan, train, and prep if Philmont seems
likely, or 6 months to find something else to do if not. I would
discuss your actual cutoff number and cutoff date with Betty or Frances
around January 1st to get their insight and advice.
