<Has anyone decided at what point duct tape is NOT a smellable?
Good point. Most likely it is the glue on the tape that has the smell that
attracts. The larger the amount of tape, as in a small roll or wrapped
around a water bottle, the more of an attraction.
So, you patch a small hole in the bottom of your backpack where a mini bear
chewed through :) I can't imagine that being enough to warrant hanging the
pack, but it should be stored under the dining fly with all other packs.
Chances are there are such a mix of smells that a bear us not going to
search it out.
The main thing is to use good common sense and keep your camp and equipment
clean and as smell free as possible. Things that are way out of human
control, such as food and water availability for the bears will have more to
do with your chances of running into one.
The recent issue of Backpacker magazine had an article on a man who has done
research on living with grizzly bears in Siberia in an area where man has
had little contact with bears. His theory is that if bears are not
programmed to be afraid of man (cause they always yell at them, bang pots or
use pepper spray) that they can live together if not threatened. Some say he
is way off base but he has been doing it for the past 7 or 8 years. It's
worth a read although it won't help at Philmont!
