The route from Clear Creek Camp to Mt Philips via the South-West trail is
the steepest I have encountered in all of Philmont. Having a full pack and
extra water for Comanche Peak dry camp made it a real challenge. Last year
the well at Clear Creek was dry and we had to filter our water from the
creek, that is the same creek that flows through Comanche Camp.
At Comanche Peak there is the best overlook on Philmont just a few yards
north of the camp sites. Do take time to take in both the sunset and
sunrise from here you will not be disappointed. Sawmill's claim to fame is
their sunrise view and it isn't as nice as Comanche Peaks in my opinion.
Last year we took a side hike for a mine tour at Cyphers Mine, we dropped
our packs and bear bagged at Thunder Ridge then went down to Cyphers. Bring
your purification/filters in case the well is not working there again this
year. Hopefully the trail will be done all the way into Sawmill this year,
there is a trail crew adding to the existing trail but they were not done
last year.
Enjoy your trek.
Remember the pleasure of Philmont is the journey and not the destination,
stop and smell the butterscotch trees.
