Well, Section 1 has not been really closed to through hiking. It has been
closed period. A bit of explanation.
The old western most trail head was a Lake Fort Smith State Park. However, the
dam is being raised, the park moved, etc.... Thus, the western most trailhead
is considered to be Jack's Creek.
Insider tip: Finding the trail head at Jack's Creek can be a bit hard to
locate. The alternative is to start at Artist Point on Highway 71 (~15 miles
north of Alma, AR), use their private logging road to hike down to Lake Shepard
Springs (soon to be combined with Lake Fort Smith), go across the dam and pick
up the OHT there.
Yes, Tim Ernest is THE EXPERT on the OHT - he built much of the trail himself.

The OHT is an excellent training ground. There is a book by Tim Ernst, a
long-time, very knowledgeable hiker of the OHT (see
http://wilderness.arkansasusa.com/OHTAinfo.html) which gives a great deal of
information about each section of the trail, including distance and elevation
maps, and directions/descriptions of trail features. You can probably find a
copy at Barnes & Noble, or order one through B&N or from the above website.
Sections 5, 6, or 7 are the most "challenging" sections in terms of terrain
differences, depending on the time you have for the trek. I believe section 1
has been closed to thru-hiking.
Have a great trip!
