RE: [Philmont]: Rain

Typically the summer rainstorms in the southern Rockies come from fast
moving cloud systems that become turbulent from the colder mountain air
meeting the hot air rising from the heated ground and the plains below. They
typically have a lot of wind associated with them, especially as they pass
by. This is one of the arguments against a poncho and in favor of a rain
suit. Sometimes you get hail and of course, that just comes straight down!
But the outflow boundaries of the storm systems are where the real wind
comes from. Keep a watchful eye on the sky as the day goes on, you will
usually see the storms brewing and growing from the higher elevations.

One thing I usually suggest to crews I help in pre-training is to have a
garbage bag for each tent setup. Often in the mornings the dew is heavy or
there may have been night time showers and bagging the tent fly in a trash
bag ensures it won' soak the inside of the back pack. Then when you reach
your next camp or during breaks along the way you can spread out the fly to
dry out.

And remember that typically, in July when you are going, the monsoon rains
start somewhere at or after lunch time so try to get an early start and get
to your next camp to set up and stay dry.
